Local people asked to give their views on town centre regeneration
Local people are being invited to find out more about Rochdale town centre’s regeneration and give their thoughts on proposals to develop new retail and leisure facilities.
An exhibition will travel around the borough, starting in the Wheatsheaf and Exchange shopping centres on Wednesday 10th March.
Genr8 Developments will be showing their initial proposals and asking people for their ideas on the new multi-million pound retail and leisure developments.
Councillor Irene Davidson, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council said: “There are some fantastic developments happening with the new Rochdale Sixth Form College set to bring hundreds of students into the town centre, followed by a new transport interchange and flagship Council office building, customer service centre and library. The new retail and leisure development, that will start on site in 2012, will be the final piece of the jigsaw and will help to make the town centre a great place for people to shop and enjoy themselves. I would urge local people to use the opportunity to come and shape the plans.”
The scheme will see new buildings replace the existing municipal offices and out-of-date bus station and will link into Yorkshire Street and the existing shopping centres.
The plans include a brand new supermarket and a department store along with more quality shops, new leisure facilities and better car parking.
Local people have said they want a revitalised town centre where they can work, learn, shop and enjoy their free time.
The first steps are already being taken with the new £26 million sixth form college set to open in the autumn, bringing 1,000 students to the town centre, creating a new buzz and supporting local shops.
A modern transport interchange welcoming people to Rochdale will follow on Smith Street then a landmark new home for the council’s customer service centre, council staff and library.
Genr8 Developments will take on board the views of the public before drawing up more detailed plans and carrying out further detailed consultation before the end of the year.
