Rochdale sites spruced up in preparation for investment

Two overgrown and untidy sites that have been prone to littering are getting a major improvement as part of the ‘Brighter Futures’ regeneration of the Oldham Road and canal side area.

Land on Oldham Road near Durham Street and next to the canal opposite Norwich Mill is being landscaped with new paths, shrubs, trees and seating to create improved open spaces.

Rochdale Development Agency and Impact Partnership are managing the project which is being funded through the Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder and the European Regional Development Fund.

Brighter Futures is a long term project which will help to create a better place to live and work, with a choice of new homes and new sites for businesses. The project also involves improving the image and appearance of the area by carrying out improvements to the local environment ahead of new development in the area.

Councillor Mohammad Sharif, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Rochdale Borough Council said: “Local people want to see action to clear up sites in the Oldham Road and canal area that are overgrown and untidy.  It is important that we identify areas that can be improved and make them more safe and pleasant for residents ahead of plans for new buildings being brought forward in the area. The new paths, landscaping and seating areas will mean that dog walkers, cyclists and people passing by can stop and enjoy the surroundings.”

Groundwork Landscapes have been commissioned to carry out the improvement work which is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Liz Meek, Regional Director Government Office for the North West, said: “As a link between Rochdale town centre and Kingsway Business Park, Oldham Road is an important economic corridor. This project will enhance the image and perceptions of the area and in turn will stimulate private sector investment and increasing values. Additionally, it complements a wider regeneration strategy along and adjoining the corridor to develop employment and housing sites.”

Gary Davies, Project Officer of Rochdale Development Agency, said: “The Brighter Futures proposals will take place over a number of years and we are still in the very early stages, however by improving these sites we are making the area more appealing to local people, visitors and potential investors.The improved sites will enhance the setting of future developments proposed in the area.”

The ERDF is managed by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA). The  programme is backed by the Programme Monitoring Committee (PMC) – a group of senior representatives from across the region. The Group was formed to monitor, oversee and advise on the delivery of the programme and proved invaluable to the development of the new fund.
